Submit Sitemap to Search Engines

Once you create a new website Google, Bing or any other search engines will start indexing your website over a period of time. It is always a good practice to submit sitemap to the search engines to their respective webmaster tools. Submitting sitemap to the search engines gives you more control over the crawling of these search engines. This would also provide you with some important information that you would require to improve the SEO of your website. Below I have given instructions on how to submit sitemap to search engines.
For this you will need to generate sitemap for your website. You could use some free tools online to generate sitemap for you website.
One free too l you can use is Sitemap Generator.

Google Webmaster Tools:

You will need to have a Google account for this.

Go to Google Webmaster Tools and login using your Google account.

Click Add Site -> Enter the URL of you website and click continue

Next you will need to verify ownership of the website

For this you could upload the html file provided (FTP access required) or you could use alternative methods like adding html meta tag to header of your webpage. Then click Verify.

If you had done the process correctly you would have verified the ownership of the website successfully.

After creating the sitemap download it and upload it to your server in the root folder (for easy access). You can now access the sitemap from yourwebsitename.com/sitemap.xml.

Now click on Sitemaps in your Site Dashboard or under the Crawls menu.

Click Add/Test Sitemap.

Enter sitemap.xml in the text field and click Submit Sitemap. You have successfully submitted sitemap to google.

If nothing wrong your site would be crawled in 24hrs. It could take more time depending upon your website.

 

Bing/Yahoo Webmaster Tools:

Now submitting your sitemap to Bing Webmaster tools is similar to submitting to Yahoo as both Bing and Yahoo have merged. So you will need to take care of Bing Webmaster tools alone for both Bing and Yahoo search engines.

You will need to have a Microsoft account to submit sitemap to Bing.

Go to Bing webmaster tools and sign in to your Microsoft account or sign up for one.

Once logged in, enter your website URL in the ‘Add Site’ text box and click Add.

Since you have already uploaded the sitemap to your server enter the path of the sitemap in the ‘Add the Sitemap’ text box.

If you had created the sitemap using the tool I mentioned above you will need to specify the sitemap URL as yourwebsitename.com/sitemap.xml.

Next you will need to verify ownership of the website

For this you could upload the html file provided (FTP access required) or you could use alternative methods like adding html meta tag to header of your webpage. Then click Verify.

Now you have successfully submitted your website sitemap to Yahoo and Bing. It would take some time to crawl your website. The status of the indexed pages can be found on clicking the Sitemap submitted in your website’s dashboard.
